The SBI PO exam is conducted in a total of three stages.

  • Phase 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

1. Phase - 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

Phase 1 is also known as the Preliminary Examination or Screening Test in other terms, and its marks are not included in the final selection. Phase 1 is the first stage of the SBI PO Exam consisting of three papers, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability. A total of 100 questions carrying 100 marks are asked in these three papers.

2. Phase - 2: Main Examination

Phase - 2 (Main Exam) is more difficult than the phase - 1 (preliminary exam). This phase tests in-depth knowledge related to banking. It consists of two tests:

  • Objective Test
  • Descriptive Test

The first is an Objective Test of 200 marks, and the second is a Descriptive Test of 50 marks. Combining both Phase - 2 is of a total of 250 marks. Both tests are conducted online on the same day, with the Descriptive Test taking place after the Objective Test.

3. Phase - 3: Interview (Psychometric Test, Group Exercise & Interview)

Phase - 3 consists of two parts:

  • Group Discussion (GD): The first part is Group Discussion (GD) which carries 20 marks.
  • Personal Interview (PI): The second part is Personal Interview (PI) which carries 30 marks.

Both parts together make phase - 3 a total of 50 marks. In this phase candidates are evaluated based on their personality, leadership skills, and banking knowledge.

  • Phase 1: Phase 1 is an online examination where candidates only need to qualify.
  • Phase 1 Merit List: A merit list is prepared based on the total marks obtained in the Preliminary Exam and candidates are shortlisted for Phase 2 (Main Exam).
  • Phase 2: The Phase 2 exam is more difficult than the Prelims and tests in-depth knowledge related to banking. Candidates are shortlisted for Phase 3 based on their marks in Phase 2.
  • Phase 2 Merit List: The result of the Phase 2 (Mains exam) is declared, and after qualifying in this phase the candidate is shortlisted for Phase 3.
  • Phase 3: In phase 3 the candidates are assessed on their personality, decision-making ability, and banking knowledge.
  • Final Merit List (Phase 2 + Phase 3): The final merit list for the SBI PO Exam is prepared based on the marks obtained in Phase 2 (Main Exam) and Phase 3 (Interview & GD).

SBI Probationary Officer (PO) Job Profile

During the Probation Period a PO is posted in different branches such as SME, Rural, and Urban branches and is trained in various banking operations.
To prepare them for future roles like Branch Manager or other senior positions they are assigned the following basic banking tasks, which help them understand how banking operations function at the ground level.
During the probation period SBI PO is trained in all essential banking processes and their performance is also evaluated. After successfully completing the training the candidate is appointed as a permanent officer in Junior Management Grade Scale-I (JMGS-I) as an Assistant Manager.

  • Customer Service: Under customer service an SBI PO is responsible for assisting customers with account opening, issuing chequebooks, and resolving issues related to debit and credit cards.
